Dear Friends

Fr George Robson was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List, but the investiture at Buckingham Palace did not take place until last week. I held back for a while trying to obtain permission to use an official photograph of Prince Charles presenting the award, but as there has been no reply from the agents I have created a very short report featuring a beautiful photograph taken outside the Palace with Fr George's relatives, Anne, Nicola and John.

You will find the report on http://www.salesians.org.uk/dbuk

Margaret Higgins, whose death is announced, was the sister of Bro Chris Higgins and Reg Higgins. The family were strong supporters of both Shrigley and Savio.

Subject: Bro Raphael AKA Bro John

Hi
Yesterday I was in the Hereford area and dropped in at Belmont Abbey and tracked down Bro Raphael Aspinwall.
We only chatted for about 15 to 20 mins as he had to prepare the Ref. for the celebration meal for an ordination which was to take place in the afternoon.
I have attached a picture of him and me.
Regards

Gerry.

Eric Baggaley writes

Good morning, Gerry! THANK YOU for this visit - and the photograph.

"Brother John" was a great colleague to have on the Shrigley Staff - and what a gifted and inspirational musician he was for Shrigley !

"  MEMORIES.......Shrigley Staff, mid to late 1950's,  Bro. John and Bro. Eric.  Photographer, John Parker, Son of Mary and Staff, teaching Geography."

I owe a lot to "Bro, John" and also to his elder brother, Fr. Gerry Aspinwall S.D.B., whose fully supportive testimonial, conveyed personally to a fellow (former) ) R.A.F Chaplain and then Parish Priest and Chair of Governors in Mansfield, helped my appointment to Head of Religious Studies.

Greetings - and thanks!

Eric

Dear Friends

Paul Barnes has sent the following:

"I am delighted to inform you that Maria, my wife , is to be awarded the Benemerenti Medal for her work over the years with the Catholic Women's League at parish, deanery, diocesan and national level. As you know she is a Salesian Cooperator and part of her work was promoting and organising the CWL Catechetical camps for children in Cornwall for several years starting from when we came here in 1985. She is currently active in our setting up of a Salesian Cooperators' Centre in Cornwall and also helps me with the parish youth group."

We congratulate Maria on this honour!

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that my father, Paul Francis Molyneux, of 48, Trevanion road, Liskeard,Cornwall, PL14 3QN, passed away on 23/5/2010.

My father often spoke of his time at Shrigley & casting my mind back many years when I was a child I think I was fortunate enough to make a visit - I might have been say 7 years old so memory after 40 year is a little cloudy. Nevertheless I was very fortunate to have shared my Fathers past memories.

Yours sincerely

Mark Molyneux (Son)

)Paul was at Shrigley from 1951-52. He came to a number of reunions a few years ago. If my memory serves me correctly he was originally from Liverpool, though he had lived in Cornwall for a long time.

Hi
I am very sad to read of Paul Molyneux's death. The only time I met him so many years after he left Shrigley was at our 75th Anniversary and I was very impressed at how fit and well he looked. I learnt in conversation with him that he had been a Military Policeman abroad but cannot recollect in which country. Ruth took a photo of Paul and myself displaying a publicity vocations leaflet in which we both featured (the photo is the penultimate one in the website gallery for the 2004 reunion) I think the leaflet was designed by Fr Keogh: certainly the letter on the back page is in his own distinctive handwriting. The front cover declared: "Don Bosco Needs You" and the centre pages have a number of photos of Salesians and their pupils in various parts of the world. One of the photos shows Fr Keogh teaching (from left to right) Rhetoricians Eric Baggaley, myself, Paddy Heron, Felix Glowicki and Taffy Moruzzi! But the two main photos are of Paul Molyneux on the left and the late Joe Roberts on the right. Liverpool and Merseyside was not a great source of Salesian vocations: boys tended to go to the Mill Hill fathers at Freshfield or to the seculars at Ushaw. I broke the mould followed by Paul from Old Swan and then the late Anthony O'Dowd from his and my home town of Wallasey.
Best Wishes,

Ted Carless

Subject: Shrigley Association Reunion - A Reminder

I write to remind you all of the Shrigley Association Reunion and AGM which takes place from 17th-19th September.

The response and bookings to date have been slow and disappointing, as we have paid large deposits at both Shrigley Hall Hotel and Savio House. I have concerns and would urge those who are thinking of attending to make their bookings or intentions known as soon as possible.

Full details of the programme, theme 'Life After Shrigley', and booking forms, can be found on our website at www.shrigleyassociation.org by clicking on 'Future events'.

I attach brief summaries of some of our speakers as a taster of what can be expected from them.

Apologies to those who have already booked or have sent informed me of prior engagements.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in September.

Best wishes,
Mike Kilduff
Secretary and Event Organiser

Dear Friends

Fr James Gallagher has made good progress in hospital and hopes to be discharged within a week or so.

Fr Michael Lindsay was in hospital over the weekend with breathing difficulties. He has returned home to St Joseph's this evening.

The sister of Fr Cyril Edamana gave birth to a daughter on 27th May, four weeks before the expected date, but mother and baby are doing well. Fr Cyril's brother-in-law is still receiving regular dialysis.

Thank you for your prayers.

Subject: A logo for Project Europe

Dear Friends
Some people are at their most creative when under pressure. If this applies to you, you may be interested in the following.
The Salesian Department for Communication in Rome is looking for a logo to use in promoting 'Project Europe' - the revitalising of the Salesian charism and presence in a continent which is experiencing severe challenges to the faith.
I was supposed to tell you about this back in March, but it slipped through one of the cracks in my filing system. The deadline is actually 15th June, a week next Tuesday!
There are no detailed specifications. My guess is that the concept is more important than technical perfection, as Rome has access to graphic designers who could tidy up your work and scale it to the different sizes needed for web pages and printed publications.
To find out more about Project Europe, go to the Central Salesian web site http://www.sdb.org and look for the PE logo (which they wish to
replace) in the left hand column. To read the documents you need to 'log in', or 'sign up' if you have not already done so.
If you work in a school or youth club you might want to involve some talented young people in the effort. There is no prize - the reward will be to see the design used world-wide.
In the reminder I was sent they mentioned that only one entry had been received so far, so you are in with a chance!
Please email me your idea as a graphic file (could be a scan or photograph of the work) by June 14th.

Subject: RE: Your sad news

Mike,
Many thanks for your kind email. I have just received the sad news that EDWARD MOONEY, at Shrigley 1946-51, passed away from a heart attack in the local hospital last Thursday.  His funeral will be at the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Wallsend this coming Friday at 11.15 a.m.  I will go up and stay overnight with Alan Burns.
